OUTDOOR HIDDEN GEMS NYC FULL
With the main street full of quirky business fronts and numerous seafood establishments, and nothing like the busy streets of New York, visiting the island is one of the more unusual things to do in NYC. Near the edge of NYC borders lies a tiny island that looks like something out of a New England dream come true called City Island. There were many little kids there, but the serene lighting and music seemed to have a calming effect on them, as they were all behaving themselves. Most Unique Things to do In New York 1. The entire facility was easily accessible for those with limited abilities, including the outdoor sea lion show.
OUTDOOR HIDDEN GEMS NYC MOVIE
Our tickets included a show (sea lions, which was a lot of fun) and a 4D movie (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, which we skipped).

If we had had more time to spend there, we would have enjoyed that part of the aquarium for at least 20 minutes, as it was peaceful and fascinating. The large observation room had very serene music and low lights, making taking a seat on the cushioned benches very inviting. The lighting in each tank changes regularly, so you'll see different things and get great opportunities to take pictures. There are loads of interactive information screens about the creatures in each tank / section, as well as a lot of room for multiple people to be looking into the tanks at one time. There are a number of buildings that you walk between, and outdoor attractions (sea lions, penguins, etc.) would normally have been more active than what we saw (being late November).

Even the very large observation room glass wall was superbly clear, making taking pictures super easy. on aquarium glass walls, but the ones here were remarkably crystal clear. I generally accept that there will be some smudges, algae, etc. In short, this is a small aquarium compared to others we have been to, but the thing that struck me was the clarity of the glass on the tanks. There is a pretty big parking lot at the aquarium if you plan on driving, but the cost of the subway ride was likely less than parking would be. The subway station is right across the street so no problem getting there. We parked near Penn Station and took the ~1 hour subway ride to the aquarium. A small crowd was waiting to get in, but it was a sunny day and we were dressed to be outdoors. We arrived just before the aquarium opened at 10am on Black Friday. They do it in a way that is entertaining and informative. The other fish and coral exhibits show what is happening in the oceans today with things like bleaching and over-fishing and how the aquarium are working with the industry to change life and make people aware of life in the oceans. It was an eye opener how sharks have their effect on the cycle of life in the oceans. It really showed how we can destroy the oceans with acts of abuse on the wildlife. They are fascinating displays to describe their lives in the ocean and the very painful experience of having their fins cut off for soup. You got to walk under where the sharks were swimming and their interaction with other fish and sea life. The new Shark exhibition and the large visual tanks is very interesting. During the show, one of the seals who had been born at the aquarium, seemed almost human since he was so used to being around people. The seals were swimming around entertaining people. It was really a nice visit as the whole aquarium has been updated and refreshed since it almost got destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.Īll the animals, the penguins, otters and seals were all outside and active on this warm sunny afternoon and very playful. I spent the afternoon at the NY Aquarium in Coney Island and what a delightful day of seeing the animals and fish, watching a very entertaining Seal show and walking through the new Shark exhibit and tanks.
